Help Change the Course of Someone’s Life

At HCRI, our important work is made possible through the generosity of alumni and supporters who understand the remarkable change fluency brings to people’s lives -- and who can identify with the need to make stuttering treatment continually better and more accessible.

As a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, we use every dollar we receive to:

  • administer stuttering therapy;
  • provide alumni with post-therapy tools and resources for life;
  • award therapy scholarships and tuition waivers to assist people in need;
  • conduct stuttering research that drives treatment advancements; and
  • operate our lean organization in a highly cost-efficient manner.

The therapy fees we receive only cover a portion of these expenses. That’s why we, like other nonprofit organizations, depend on annual donations and special gifts to continue our important work and enhance people's lives through fluency.

Flexibility and Choice

We strive to make donating easy and convenient, while offering a wide choice of giving funds, which are described below.

We also encourage you to consider including HCRI as a beneficiary in your will or trust. Bequests are an important source of support and will help ensure the Institute continues to help people who stutter for generations to come. HCRI Giving Funds and Opportunities

Gift of Fluency - Annual Operating Fund

This general fund is vital to HCRI. Contributions are needed to support stuttering therapy delivery, our clinician team, and maintaining essential operating requirements of the Institute.

  • Join the HOLLINS SOCIETY:

    HCRI alumni and friends who donate $1,000 or more annually will receive special recognition as a Hollins Society member during the year and at HCRI’s Alumni Reunion.

HCRI Therapy Scholarship Fund

To make stuttering treatment more affordable for those in need, HCRI awards therapy scholarships that help cover a portion or nearly all of the cost of therapy. These scholarships are fully funded by HCRI friends and alumni.

  • Consider a NAMED SCHOLARSHIP:

    HCRI supporters who pledge and make an annual scholarship gift of $10,000 or more for five years will have a scholarship named on their behalf (or in recognition of a friend or loved one). Those who give an endowed scholarship of $100,000 or more also will be honored with a perpetually named scholarship.

Research and Technology Fund

Through our ongoing research and treatment innovations, HCRI is recognized as a worldwide leader in stuttering therapy. We continue to develop new technologies and advance the therapy process to make fluency-skill learning easier and results longer lasting. HCRI’s new “speech microscope” is just one example of how we work towards championing greater understanding and treatment of this unique disorder.

  • Become a CHAMPION OF DISCOVERY:

    When you give $1,000 or more to HCRI’s Research and Technology Fund, you will become a Champion of Discovery for the Institute. In recognition, we will send you a certificate that is suitable for framing.

Buy-a-Brick Program – Paving the Way to Fluency

HCRI’s brick patio represents a place to show support for HCRI, help others who stutter, and leave a permanent mark on the Institute with the purchase of an inscribed brick. Each brick can be imprinted with up to three lines of type, with each line having up to 14 letters/spaces. Funds will be used for HCRI’s Gift of Fluency – Annual Operating Fund. A brick with a one-line inscription is $250, two-line inscription is $375, and three-line inscription is $500.

Bronze Donor Recognition Tree

A beautiful bronze “donor recognition tree” is prominently displayed on the wall of HCRI’s lobby and symbolizes the strength and growth possible through fluency. The tree is adorned with bronze leaves that can be engraved with a personalized message or tribute in recognition of a friend or loved one. Each engraved leaf is $500 and will be used for HCRI’s Gift of Fluency – Annual Operating Fund.

What Donors Say

“I strongly support HCRI for two main reasons. First, I owe the Institute and its dedicated staff much of my career success. HCRI has enabled me to meet public speaking challenges I could only dream about before enrolling. Second,the greater the Institute's capabilities, the more stutterers can receive the same liberating gift of fluency it gave me.”

“I am indebted to HCRI every day of my life. The innovative therapy and talented staff provided me the gift of fluency. I am honored to support HCRI's research and scholarship funds and help the Institute continue to provide for others a therapy that really works.”

Gina Abrams

“HCRI did a lot for me. That's why I not only want to give back; I want to pay forward. The Rose Flaum Scholarship Fund provides tuition for those stutterers (college and graduate students) who need therapy but cannot afford it. I am happy I am able to provide this to my fellow stutterers.”

“I give to Hollins because it is the only speech course that works! For thirty-five years, the staff at HCRI has never given up on me. Despite physical problems, they have worked with me and encouraged me. They continue to fine-tune the stuttering therapy and do research that helps to make their fluency training method even better. I give to help other stutterers and in thankfulness for what HCRI has done for me”.

HCRI Alumni Tell Their Stories

Henry Kessler
Plainsboro, New York

While it was always a struggle, I never let my stuttering stop me as I went through school and started on my career path. Yet, I always felt like I paid a price for each of my accomplishments. That price meant dealing with immense fear, anxiety, and stress every time I needed to communicate.

When I started working after business school, I realized how important strong communication skills were to my future. To advance in my field, I needed to master public speaking and effortlessly give presentations, participate in meetings and talk on the phone.

Since childhood, I have participated in different types of speech therapy and even tried using a special device designed to help with stuttering. None of the approaches helped with my fluency.

Then I was told about HCRI by a senior executive from my company who took a special interest in my career development. She knew of a colleague who had tremendous success with the Hollins program and put me in touch with him. Soon thereafter, I went to Roanoke and participated in the program. It was the first time any speech therapy had worked. At HCRI, I learned techniques and exercises that enabled me to speak fluently.

Since attending the program, my fear and anxiety from stuttering have been replaced with enjoyment and anticipation. I’ve advanced to a new position with my company and now look forward to presenting in front of groups and talking with business associates.

While I didn’t recognize doors being closed before I went to HCRI, now I definitely see them opening.

Participating in the HCRI therapy program gave me more confidence and enabled me to take on leadership roles in my academic career that I never before would have considered.

When I was a teacher, I could control the environment in my classroom and create structure that helped with my speech. Yet, once I became a school administrator, things changed and my stuttering was increasingly interfering with daily tasks. I was not comfortable doing presentations, speaking up in meetings or talking on the telephone.

That’s when I decided to enroll in the HCRI program. The therapy was hard work. Yet, I learned how to control my stuttering. My fluency continued to improve with each day of treatment.

Since stuttering is a journey that continues through life, I realized when I returned home that I needed to regularly practice the breathing, articulating and other skills I learned at Hollins to maintain my fluency.

Soon after attending HCRI, I landed a new job with greater responsibility. With practice and smooth speech, I have more self-assurance than ever before and can comfortably talk in front of people whenever the need arises.

Throughout my life, my stuttering eroded my confidence and served as a constant barrier during school, at work and in social settings.
When I graduated from college a few years ago, I knew I needed to make fluency a priority in my life if I was going to achieve my full potential.

I worked as an administrative assistant at DuPont at that time and wanted to position myself for greater responsibility with the company. So I looked into a variety of different stuttering therapy programs and enrolled in HCRI’s fluency program because I discovered the therapy is designed to work in the real world – and that’s exactly what I needed.

HCRI's fluency program was intensive. I spent 100 hours over 12 days retraining my speech muscles and acquiring skills to speak fluently. By the end of therapy, I was able to control my stuttering for the first time in my life.

When I returned to work with my new fluency skills, I was approached by management to serve as co-chair of the Spruance Women’s Network. The network is an organization dedicated to collaboration, community service and outreach. With new found confidence, I seized the opportunity!

The new role required me to speak in front of management and staff on a regular basis. I would have never been able to do that before going through HCRI's fluency program. Now I consider public speaking opportunities a chance to put my fluency skills to the test and help make a difference in the lives of others.

Learning to speak fluently whenever and wherever I choose has changed my life. I have since joined Toastmasters, received a promotion with DuPont, and taken on greater responsibilities – at work and as a community volunteer. I also help HCRI by leading phone practice groups and workshops. Maintaining fluency takes daily practice. Yet, my ability to speak fluently has made a remarkable difference in my life.

"I was good at learning languages. However, I stuttered badly, so badly in fact, that I actually broke my teeth during several different bouts of stuttering. I became a corporate trouble shooter after learning how to speak fluently at HCRI."
